Growing Up in the Local Church

My experience growing up in the local church has been positive. I got saved at a very young age. At times things get rough but the Lord is always there in a real and personal way.

Because my parents are very active in the church, many times I felt the pressure to appear spiritual and religious to fulfill others' expectations of me. I went to all the conferences, read the Bible through a couple of times, and also read many books by Watchman Nee and Witness Lee. However, this turned out to be very unfulfilling for me and I went through periods when I was angry with the Lord and tried to fill my life up with other things.

In high school I became involved with many activities on campus. I played sports year round, took hard classes, and joined clubs. I did every “normal” thing that a high schooler does. I went to movies, listened to music (even played in a band for a short period of time), eyed the girls, got into trouble, and made many friends; yet I always knew that my destiny was to be with the Lord.

My senior year was tough. Sports and academics took up all my time and I rarely went to the church meetings. My parents didn't lay down the law though. They understood what I was going through and allowed me to find the Lord again on my own. In the Fall I applied to colleges, not really caring too much about my future. I began to spend more time with my friends and less time with the believers.

Now I have graduated and the summer is just beginning. I will be going to The University of California at Los Angeles next year where I will be living in a Christian brothers' house full of young Christian men who love the Lord. With high school behind me and my work load severely diminished, I am finding the Lord all over again. I can't escape Him. Now my decision to go to meetings is not my parents' but mine. I keep coming back to the Lord because He is so real. I can feel Him inside of me. He is so kind, so understanding, and even so human.
